Food Poisoning Cases in Government Hostels Raise Concerns

Food poisoning incidents continue to plague government-run hostels in the district. On the day before yesterday, 29 female students at the Gurukulam residential school in the district fell ill due to food poisoning. Just a day later, four students from the ZPHS Gurukulam hostel in LMD Colony also suffered from food poisoning and are currently receiving treatment at a government hospital.
However, despite these incidents, government officials have shown little concern. When attempts were made to speak to the students about the issue, police were seen blocking access and preventing discussions. Allegations have surfaced that government officials, in collusion with contractors, are providing substandard vegetables to the students. When officials visit, fresh vegetables are reportedly brought in to impress them, but once they leave, poor-quality vegetables are used again.
Doggali Sridhar, District Secretary of the BC Welfare Association, has demanded that authorities take immediate action, reprimand the contractors, and ensure fresh vegetables are provided regularly. He also warned that if the issue persists, the contracts should be terminated.
