The Unfulfilled Dreams of Telangana: A Tribute to Police Kishtayya
Deccan freedom
Hyderabad, Dec 1: Despite the formation of Telangana as a separate state, the core goals of the statehood movement—water, funds, and appointments—remain unachieved, said Professor Ghanta Chakrapani, the first chairman of TSPSC. Speaking at the 15th death anniversary of Police Kishtayya Mudiraj, he emphasized that the sacrifices of over 1200 youths, including Kishtayya, have not yielded the envisioned outcomes for Telangana’s people.
At the memorial meeting held at Somajiguda Press Club, Professor Chakrapani highlighted that the youth who laid down their lives during the movement, such as Police Kishtayya, were driven by a commitment to Telangana’s liberation. He called for recognizing Kishtayya as the first martyr and proposed a reform center in his memory to inspire future generations.
Chief guest Allam Narayana, the first chairman of the Telangana Media Academy, criticized the current political climate, stating that the democratic ideals for which the youth sacrificed remain elusive. He drew parallels between the repression faced during the movement and the policies in today’s Telangana.
Retired Inspector General Akula Narasimhulu urged the government to honor Kishtayya’s sacrifice by instituting an award in his name within the police department and including his story in school curricula. He called on Telangana activists and Mudiraj associations to advocate for this recognition.
Pittala Ravinder, founder of the Mudiraj Study Forum, recounted Kishtayya’s selfless act, stating it was not impulsive but a deeply considered decision driven by the movement’s ideals. He stressed that Kishtayya’s sacrifice as a police officer was unique and should be remembered by all.
The event, organized by the Police Kishtayya Mudiraj Memorial Trust, included a tribute from family members and leaders. A two-minute silence was observed in honor of Kishtayya. The meeting concluded with calls for continued efforts to realize the dreams of Telangana’s martyrs.
