Syria's New Transitional Prime Minister Calls for Stability Amid Historic Changes

Syria's newly appointed transitional prime minister, Mohammad al-Bashir, has called for "stability and calm" in his first statement following the ousting of longtime president Bashar al-Assad. Bashir, appointed by rebel forces to lead the country until March 1, spoke during an interview with Qatar’s Al Jazeera, emphasizing the need for a peaceful transition after years of conflict.

The ousting of Assad came after an Islamist-led opposition alliance, spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, launched a rapid offensive, seizing control of Damascus. Assad reportedly fled to Moscow, leaving behind a regime that ruled with an iron grip for five decades.

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of the rebel offensive, assured the public of plans for development, reconstruction, and stability. Speaking to Sky News, Jolani stated, "The country is exhausted from war. It’s time to rebuild and move towards peace." However, concerns remain over the rebel group’s past affiliations with Syria’s Al-Qaeda branch.

The United States, through Secretary of State Antony Blinken, has urged the formation of an inclusive and non-sectarian government. The UN envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for unity and action on the ground.

As Syrians celebrate the fall of Assad's regime, challenges persist. Thousands remain missing from Assad’s detention centers, with families frantically searching for loved ones. Released detainees reveal harrowing tales of torture and inhumane conditions.

Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions have escalated, with Israel launching airstrikes on Syrian military installations. The strikes, aimed at preventing the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah, have drawn condemnation from the UN, which called for an immediate halt to Israeli incursions.

Amid this historic turning point, global leaders have emphasized accountability, inclusiveness, and humanitarian aid as priorities for Syria’s future. The transitional government faces immense challenges as it seeks to rebuild a nation devastated by a nearly 14-year civil war that claimed over 500,000 lives and displaced millions.
