Student Organizations Oppose Appointment of EDCET Convener; Demand Transparency

WARANGAL DECEMBER 18

Warangal: The recent appointment of a Physics professor as the EDCET convener at Kakatiya University (KU) has sparked widespread criticism and protests from student organizations, raising concerns about procedural irregularities and caste-based favoritism in the selection process.

The Telangana State Higher Education Council (TGCHE) announced plans to conduct the TGCETS-2025 efficiently, facilitating admissions into UG and PG professional courses through Common Entrance Tests (CETs). While Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has been entrusted with organizing EDCET for B.Ed admissions, Kakatiya University (KU) has come under fire for appointing a Physics professor, an individual unrelated to the education discipline, as the EDCET convener.

Critics argue that appointing a professor from an unrelated subject undermines the credibility of the examination. They insist that only a qualified education professor, deputed from another university if necessary, should oversee the process. This ensures adherence to academic standards and guarantees fairness in organizing the test.

Student organizations have demanded the immediate cancellation of the current appointment, alleging that the selection is both illegal and biased. “How can a Physics professor conduct an education-related exam?” questioned student leaders, emphasizing that such actions jeopardize the integrity of the examination process.

Allegations of caste-based favoritism have further fueled the controversy. Critics point out that the Registrar, Vice-Chancellor, and TGCHE Chairman, all of whom belong to the Reddy community, have played a role in nominating a Physics professor from the same caste as the EDCET convener. Intellectuals and student organizations are questioning whether merit and qualifications were overlooked in favor of caste-based considerations.

The controversy comes in the wake of recent scrutiny over KU’s handling of ICET and now EDCET, raising concerns about the university’s administrative transparency. Student leaders and intellectuals are urging authorities to ensure impartiality and accountability in such key appointments.

The student organizations have vowed to continue their protests until the appointment is revoked and a qualified education professor is appointed as the EDCET convener. This demand is not only for procedural fairness but also to restore public confidence in the examination system.
