Electricity meter readers in the erstwhile Chittoor district are facing numerous challenges, with workers performing dual duties, including meter reading and additional tasks such as bill collection, impacting the livelihoods of dedicated meter readers. A delegation led by AITUC district president and honorary president of meter readers, N. Chandrasekhar Reddy, submitted a memorandum to Superintendent Engineer Surendra Naidu and Chief Vigilance Officer Janardhan Naidu on Monday, highlighting these issues.
The memorandum detailed instances of shift operators, watchmen, and other departmental staff undertaking meter reading duties alongside their regular work, reducing employment opportunities for professional meter readers. It further emphasized that this practice is reducing the income of meter readers who rely solely on this profession.
The delegation, including AITUC Tirupati city secretary N.D. Ravi and meter reader leaders Varma and Ramesh, accused contractors of exploiting government funds by avoiding ESI and PF contributions, thus violating workers’ rights. They demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the matter and strict action against those responsible for this misuse of resources.
Responding to the concerns, Superintendent Engineer Surendra Naidu acknowledged the issue, stating, “Assigning dual duties is improper. I will gather details and take appropriate action to address the situation.”
The leaders warned that if immediate action is not taken, they will plan protest programs to ensure justice for the workers.
