The opposition alliance, INDIA bloc, has moved a notice in the Rajya Sabha to initiate a no-confidence motion against Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Accusing Dhankhar of partisan conduct and undermining his constitutional responsibilities, the notice alleges repeated instances of unfair treatment towards opposition members since his assumption of office on August 11, 2022.

The notice outlines several grievances, including Dhankhar's frequent interruptions of opposition speeches, misuse of privilege motions to silence dissent, and public criticism of opposition leaders. Furthermore, the Vice-President is accused of openly aligning himself with the RSS and projecting his personal affiliations, which are deemed inappropriate for the neutrality expected of his role.

Specific allegations include Dhankhar's refusal to address valid objections raised by the Leader of the Opposition, disparaging remarks against opposition leaders, and actions that diminish the dignity of the Rajya Sabha. The opposition also highlighted his biased conduct during the House proceedings on December 9, 2024, where he allegedly provoked Treasury Benches to target the opposition.

The notice cites Article 67 of the Indian Constitution, which allows members of the Rajya Sabha to issue a 14-day notice for the removal of the Vice-President. According to the INDIA bloc, Dhankhar's actions have turned the position of Rajya Sabha Chairperson into a spokesperson for the ruling government, thereby compromising the non-partisan nature of the role.

The INDIA bloc emphasized the urgent need for accountability to preserve the sanctity of constitutional offices and the democratic principles of the nation. The motion marks a significant political development, reflecting the growing tension between the ruling government and the opposition alliance.
