How A Tailor's Tag Cracked a Murder Case in Odisha

Cuttack: A seemingly insignificant tailor’s tag stitched onto a blood-stained shirt became the breakthrough clue that helped Odisha Police unravel a complex murder case.

The case began on December 13, when police discovered the body of a 35-year-old woman on the banks of Kathjodi River in Cuttack under Kandarpur police station. With no complaints lodged and the deceased remaining unidentified, investigators faced a challenging mystery.

Cuttack DCP Jagmohan Meena revealed that while tattoos on the woman’s hands provided no leads, a blood-stained shirt and pants found nearby offered the first real clue. Both garments bore a tailor’s tag labeled "New Star Tailors."

After exhaustive verification of similar tailors across Odisha, it was determined that the tags originated from Gujarat. The Gujarat Police assisted in tracing the tailor in Surat, whose records indicated that the shirt was stitched for a customer named "Babu."

Further inquiry led to an unexpected breakthrough: the tailor recalled transferring ₹100 via an e-wallet to this customer due to a lack of change. This detail provided investigators with a contact number, linking them to "Babu," later identified as Jagannath Duhuri (27) from Kendrapada.

Police apprehended Jagannath while he was traveling by train to Surat. During interrogation, he confessed to being the brother-in-law of the deceased and admitted to the crime, committed alongside his brother Balaram Duhuri and cousin Hapi Duhuri.

The investigation revealed a tragic motive: chronic marital discord. Balaram, the husband of the deceased, suspected her of having an extra-marital affair, which led to the crime.

This case exemplifies the importance of meticulous investigation and how even the smallest clue can lead to justice.
